A serving of yam pepper soup with fish. |
Yam pepper soup and fish for nursing mumsYam pepper soup for new mothers is cooked without oil, can be cooked with any meat of choice. It goes well with chicken (local chicken not broilers). You can use goat meat, ram, beef, dried fish, fresh fish and so on but I think fish and chicken are healthier options.
Different parts of Nigeria serve this meal to women who just gave birth to babies but, there are slight variations with ingredients and consistency. The name says it’s great for nursing moms. I am not nursing any baby right now but made it because it’s good for everyone.
Very nutritious. Yam pepper soup is one of Nigeria’s many delicacies prepared especially for postpartum moms, to help
heat up the system and clear all left overs in there. It is used in many parts of Nigeria. The very day a woman gives birth to her baby, she is served this energizing delicacy to help cleanse and improve energy lost in the labour room.
This yam pepper soup is cooked and served almost daily for the first few weeks after delivery and it actually helps. Oilless yam pepper soup is cooked with herbs and local spices but not in all cases, depending on the new mom’s tolerance for spices.
For those who love pepper, it is cooked very spicy. I cooked with just a little pepper so the kids too can eat. Doesn’t require many ingredients, easy to make and very delicious.
