My sugarcane zobo juice drink is something you will taste once and want to have a second glass. Sugarcane zobo juice made by mixing homemade sugarcane juice with some zobo (Sorrel, Hibiscus flower) drink.
This drink is so healthy, everything about this sugarcane and zobo combination is natural, nothing processed, no additives at all. This is all the rich nutrients of zobo drink combined with that of lemon and sugarcane. It’s something we must try again after today as I already know the kids will be very well distracted from soft drinks after enjoying this yumminess.
All you need is a food blender, some drinking water, some ice cubes to chill the drink and your sugarcane and zobo drinks. If you live in Northern Nigeria, you’ll see sugarcane all the time. Sugarcane sellers are everywhere as one drives along Abuja roads.
So, we went to do some grocery shopping and on our way back home, my little boy won’t stop talking about how he wants some sugarcane juice.
Honestly I don’t know how my kids tasted something just once after a neighbour offered and even though I sing it like a song that the name ‘sugarcane juice’ puts some feeling in my head like… Isn’t that like gulping the same sugar we are trying to avoid?
There’s no time we go to NEXT Cash n Carry that these kids won’t tap me to stop get sugarcane juice and for every time that they asked I said a BIG NO!
Maybe I’m overreacting but only me knows how it feels when I hear a drink called ‘sugar drink’ So, until yesterday. I gave it a thought, looked for ways to give them that same sugarcane with less sugar and more nutrients without destroying the taste.
Luckily for me, we saw sugarcane sellers and I picked a few sticks. They were too happy about mummy buying sugar cane.
After letting them have a small stick (It’s holiday na), we hid the rest to get some zobo leaves boiled first. The product of ordinary unsweetened zobo drink, sugarcane, ice cubes and just a dash of lemon is unbelievably awesome.
This drink is no longer for the kids because even though I don’t like sweet things, I love this drink. It’s mildly sweet, diluted and tastes like some rich fruit juice that I don’t know how to describe right now.
I Just finished taking pictures and half is gone and the glass is still staring at me as I stare back trying to restrain myself but the urge to place my lips on that chill glass is so strong I cannot resist.
My plan ight now is to empty the cold sweaty glass and start making another round before the kids are back from the salon. I will sure make another badge immediately because it’s easy and straightforward.
No long winding recipe or list of ingredients, No. This Christmas, your guests will never guess you combined zobo with sugarcane juice, neither will they know that a little drop of lemon in this drink is the reason for the rich taste.
If you follow this recipe, make the sugarcane zobo drink and serve to anyone, if they don’t smile and ask for more, come back a get a refund. I mean it. Come back for your refund if after making this drink, you don’t slowly empty the jug yourself with the temptation to quickly suck and chew the piece of lemon in the glass. Come back for your return I promise. My piece of lemon is slowly sinking down the bottom of the chill glass but I’ll put my hand in there and pull it out when I’m ready. Let this post go live first before I look that way again.
1. Cut and blend clean pieces of sugarcane to make juice, then filter using a
Sieve and dispose of the chaff.
fine sieve or muslin cloth
2. Add homemade red zobo (hibiscus flower drink) gradually until you are satisfied with the shade of red. The more zobo you add the more red your drink gets.
3. Drop in ice block (Ice cubes)
4. Drop a slice of lemon or more and serve chill.
5. Enjoy with friends and family.
TIP: After the first blending, it’s best to filter out the chaff, use the juice from there to blend the remaining sugarcane without adding more water. Too much water will completely take away the little sweetness.
That’s all you need to make delicious sugarcane zobo drink.
