Iyawo Nylon Bag By SoulSpasms

The Darkside Of An Average Nigerian Girl

The compound was silent. This was normal because everyone had gone out on their respective businesses, both honest and dishonest.
The street where the house was located was equally quiet. The street was not a busy street to start with, and since it was a weekday, it was even quieter. A car passed by occasionally, breaking the silence of the environment but the break was temporary. Once the vehicle passed, the silence descended like a heavy blanket once again.

Chilo yawned and

stretched like a lazy cat on the floor. She rolled onto her stomach and rested her chin on her folded arms. As much as she loved the solitude, sometimes the silence got to her.

Lying on the battered settee on the other side of the living room, her three year old brother dozed fitfully. She and her brother were the only occupants in the compound. Her mother had gone to work while her older siblings were away at school. She was supposed to be at school too but since her parents couldn’t afford her school fees, she had to stay behind and babysit her brother.

She tried not to think too much about school and books. She had finished primary school the previous academic year. Mother told her not to worry, that Jss1 wasn’t at all what it was hyped to be. As soon as Daddy got a job, she would enroll in one of the best schools around, so she wasn’t to worry her little head about school and what not.

The problem was Mummy had been singing the same tune for a long time now. The first term of the new academic session had passed, and so had the second term too, and now, the third term was almost rounding up and Mum was still saying the same thing. Well, she didn’t want to make too much of a big fuss about it.

They were going through hard times, as Mother reminded them every minute. Most times, the family only ate when Daddy went out to go hustle. Mum was a teacher in a public primary school and to say her salary was peanuts was an understatement.

Sometimes Mum didn’t go to work because she couldn’t afford the transport fare. Those days when she stayed home, she sat stone faced in the parlor and waited for Daddy to come home from his job hunting.

A lot of the times Daddy came back home very late at night. As soon as he stepped into the house, Mum would ask “how far?” Daddy would wearily sink into one of the raggedy arm chairs in the living room, sigh and reply “nothing yet”.

Mummy would sit still for some minutes, grim and contemplative, then get up and silently enter into the kitchen to go bring out whatever dinner she had been able to hustle up. On good days, dinner consisted of watery soup with tiny bits of crayfish floating around in the concoction and eba made from sour garri, the type people called Ijebu Garri. Whether the garri was truly processed in Ijebu land, she never could tell. One day while grimacing and swallowing the hard mounds, she asked her mother this question that always bothered her each time she was…………..

  3. The full story is on Nairaland. Is she the same person who wrote that?
Too many plagiarism on this blog, from copying word by word recipes from allnigerianrecipes.com to copying stories on Nairaland and it has come to copying literature works

  4. Very stupid talk. Shame on your cos you don't know that the owner of allnigerian recipes, Aunty flo herself is a member of this blog family. She reads and leaves comments here when she is free.

Evil genius, fighting Aunty Eya like she committed a crime by opening a blog like others do.

Can you now see that it's the same author? Double shame. we don't kniow you but you know yourself. Baseless accusations. When you see blogs with fake things yoiu won't even know. *rme and waiting*

  7. Wow, Iya Nylon Bag has made its debut here?? You guys are in for the ride of your lyf! I'm a big fan of the writer of nairaland. The writer came out first runner up in the sectional awards for literature poster of the year last year. The lady is very talented and humble and she's going places if she continues writng with consistency. Good to see aunty eya is featuring her works. Kudos

  8. I have seen a recipe sent in by a reader here. The same thing was on Nigerian recipes and it wasn't the same blogger. However the wordings were the same no difference. At least reference should have been made to all Nigerian recipes.
And also there are some stories here that were culled from Nairaland. Like the lady who gave birth and didn't know what to do. It appeared on Nairaland and later appeared here.
It's ok once in a while but when I see more and more similar stories I just begin to question this blog.
Eya voltrons attack me all you can, I've said my mind. Better still Eya delete if you don't like.

  11. Anon 11:51, let me share my personal experience with you. I stumbled on very educating advice to couples, learnt a lot from it and wanted to share with WC reders so I copied it and sent a mail to Aunty Eya.

After about an hour, I got a reply from her that she cannot post it cos she saw that same article in another website. I was impressed and apologized to her because I didn't know it's wrong to copy what you read online and share with others.

Aunty Eya told me not to worry that if I have original articles I should send them and she will post. #That's my experience with her posting.

  12. To the Anon saying that they saw some things on Nairaland and here. Thrice IN THE past, I have asked Aunty Eya for permission to post her nice recipes on Nairaland which she obliged.

I posted with my Naiealand ID and that does not mean I own the recipes. Eya herself gave me the permission to post them there. SMH much.

  13. Anon 11:51Am, As one reader who has followed this blog right from July 2012 till now, I think I know your type.
The way you are sounding and repeating yourself, if you saw any recipe by a poster from another blog, I bet you would have been the first to leave a comment on that post complaining.
Aunty Eya's email is boldly written on this blog for all to see. Please tell us now that you sent her a mail complaining and she didn't do anything.

You are just a bad loser.

  17. There is really no form of plagiarism, am sure of that! Because I once sent a mail, and Anty Eya informed me that its frm another site so she can't post it! So am sure she verifies what she posts, also the writer has admitted that she is the same person on nairaland.

  24. Hi Anon 11:15; am suspecting u know Ada very well and u might probably be her friend cause u seem to know much about her.. My advise is to settle whatever it is dat is causing all these and be happy.. Bitterness deters sucess in life.. Don't get me wrong o,I don't totally agree with her every opinion, infact,I sometimes consider some as "I too know" but haba, na blog we dey, e no reach make we dey attack her every comment.. Have seen a few things she has sent it that I love, I love her home made lip gloss, her red velvet cake, her ice cream,I can't hate but give that to her..

Long story short, let's try to appreciate people a little and even when we want to correct or give advise, let's watch our words.. She's only human just like you too.. Ndo..

  25. It's so sad dat ppl can go 2 ny extent 2 to try and destroy anoda person. Every1 on dis blog knows dat Ahda is not an empty vessel. I dnt see anytin wrong wit wat she said. ppl talk about their history n achievement all d time esp on d internet n blogs. it's left 4 u 2 ovalook if it reminds u dat u hav achieved nuffin. when ezewayi wrote all her achievments u all were laughin n congratulatin her but we all kno dat was a lie. dis is wickedness. dnt use words on ppl dat can destroy dem. Ahda has her flaws but ur attacks on her are 2much. its almost devilish. Ahda, as I hav advised u befor, u hav sometin special dat d devil wants t destry. dnt let him. be strong and God will see u thru.
