This shawarma sauce is what I use for all my shawarma recipes; Homemade chicken shawarma, Homemade beef shawarma and all every every. It became my go to shawarma sauce when I realized that every time I make my homemade shawarma, people comment on the sauce and they want the recipe.
Different people use different ingredients for their shawarma sauce to suit their taste buds. Some Cultures add greek yogurt to make shawarma sauce. If you want shawarma sauce with the taste of good shawarmas made in Nigeria. Here it is the recipe to use.
To make shawarma sauce in Nigeria, thankfully the few ingredients are readily available and easy to mix. You only need about three to four ingredients
to make delicious shawarma sauce in Nigeria. The shawarma sauce ingredients are all available in the kitchen, in my kitchen, in every Nigerian kitchen and even outside. These are ingredients we make use of almost daily in our cooking, sandwiches or as toppings for bakes.
Here is the list of ingredients I use for shawarma sauce.
INGREDIENTS FOR MAKING SHAWARMA SAUCE
- Yaji (Dried chilli powder)
- Tomato ketchup
- Warm water
- Mayonnaise
- Salt
- For customized tastes to suit your taste buds, feel free to add other flavors of choice and make that personalized shawarma sauce that your palate enjoys. The ingredients listed above are the basic ingredients for shawarma sauce but we are not bound by any law. Depending on the mood, sometimes I sprinkle a little black pepper or oregano in the shawarma sauce because of the particular taste I want to enjoy at that moment.
PROCEDURE TO MAKE
Here is the procedure that I use for how to make shawarma sauce in Nigeria:
- First I add the Mayonnaise to a bowl
- Add in some ketchup and mix. The mayo is more than the ketchup like 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise to 1 tablespoon of ketchup. You can increase or reduce that quantity.
- Finally, we add the yaji. My yaji has some dried beef ground together and I love the flavour. You can add any dried chilli powder to your tolerance. I make for kids so we go for just 1 to 2 teaspoons of yaji (Dried chillies powder). Add the chilli powder and mix well before gradually dropping in warm water while mixing.
- Do not add too much warm water at once because you need to check and stop when it’s not watery. Just runny Or as thick as you want. I make my shawarma sauce a bit runny just like pancake batter consistency.

HOW TO USE SHAWARMA SAUCE
To use shawarma sauce in your yummy shawarma. Add while mixing the chopped vegetables and pieces of cooked chicken or beef. Do’t add the sauce first.
Get the vegetables and meats ready in a bowl, then pour in the Shawarma sauce to preference. You may add some sauce while folding the shawarma in the Naan or pitta bread. In that case a drizzle bottle will help do the job of gently drizzling in the sauce as you squeeze the bottle.
