Making African pounded yam with a food processor |
Hello Aunty Eya,
I am tired of eating poundo yam but can’t pound boiled yam smoothly with a mortar and pestle. I visited a friend and ate very well made pounded yam made with her food processor.
She actually wrote down the steps for me but I am yet to have a food processor. I was just wondering if someone can make, take pictures and help share with us, it would be more fun and easier to make.
Her first attempt was lumpy anyway, but the one I ate was exactly like yam pounded with a mortar and pestle by professional yam pounders. When she asked me “doesn’t pounded yam look like dough?” I just knew that the dough blade in a food processor should do the yam pounding job.
Here are the steps she wrote out for me:
- Boil the yam soft like the one you boil for pounding.
- Attach the dough blade to the food processor and turn the heat to low.
- Allow the yam to continue boiling while you pick a few slices depending on the size, and place in the food processor
- Cover your bowl, then turn the control dial to maximum
- Keep the engine running at maximum, watch the yam turn into grains like garri before pulling itself together into a dough.
- Allow it to run for a few seconds longer before you stop it, open the bowl and scoop out your pounded yam wrapped around the blade. Those who like soft pounded yam can add a little hot water with the yam slices before covering the bowl.
that all this pounding like dough happens in seconds. If the boiled yam is much, scoop the already pounded one and put in another batch of boiled yam. Go over the process again and just continue like that until all the boiled yam is processed into pounded yam.

Hi, u can use a regular blender for the ede. That's what I use for my ede for bitter leaf soup and oha soup. It comes out beautifully well.
But to use blender foe ede you will have to add water, won't it make the soup watery?

A food processor has some similarities with a blender but can do more than a blender. Shred, tear, grind cut and deal with harder foods even nuts.Lol
Thank you for the info never knew ….Madam Kofo
I suggest adding potatoes to your mix if you live abroad as that is a lot cheaper if you get the mix right maybe no more than 10- 30% it may not be noticed .An alternative is unripe plantain. Certainly worth experimenting with!
