How to cook fresh catfish gravy
Fresh catfish gravy to serve with rice. |
Fresh fish gravy is one of those healthy tasty dishes that I can serve and even eat daily without complain. It is fast and easy to cook, looks so appetizing and rich when served.
For the kids who complain whenever there is pepper in food, I warned them earlier , that this dish is for adults because, I cannot afford to cook or eat fresh fish without enough fresh pepper.
The warning failed to get them deterred. With sounds of heavy breathing in and out through their mouths, they quietly devoured this peppery fish, Quietly, I mean. They knew I wasn’t begging anyone to eat, so, they behaved and even confessed that they enjoyed the pepper. Lol!

Cooking Procedure:
For those who know how to cook fresh fish pepper soup, you can follow that method, but remember to thicken a little with flour.
- microwave fish in salted water ( For very big fishes, to enable them cook right inside too) For smaller fish, you can skip microwaving and just cook the fish in in a pot with salted water before adding in your gravy
- For the fish gravy, saute’ the chopped white part of spring onion, chopped cabbage, chopped or ground red pepper and seasoning. Add a little flour, stir, check for salt before pouring into the salted microwaved or boiled fresh fish.
- Simmer for about 8 to 10 minutes, or as long as you want the gravy to seep into the fresh fish.”cook in a deep pot so that the fish sinks inside and gets covered by the sauce, Check again for salt, taste and thickness before turning off the heat.
- Serve with boiled or curried rice, boiled yam or boiled unripe plantain.
I am really truly sorry about using this fry pan. I completely forgot. It won’t happen again by God’s SPECIAL grace.
Enjoy!
yummy you are tempting me ohhhh…. presently on a diet but will try it out tonite with brown rice.
Yaaeey first to comment!hehehe(never tot I would do this too)
Anyway back to serious matters,so after months of reading ur lyrical wax comment on LIB amidst the bashing u receive, yet u weren't deterred one bit,I decided to open the link to your blog YesT.
And boyyy was I amazed!I quickly bookmarked and read over 15post in a period of 20min!
And yes I did do the fried spaghetti(used tumeric powder instead of curry) for my lunch @ work 2day,haven't tasted so hope it turns out great as u made it sound!
My observation is that u like cabbage paa,wow every meal u add cabbage, interesting.
And yes even tho my frying pan @ home looks like yours,I don't enjoy seeing pictures of yours here, takes out something out of the whole presentation so I kinda agree with Sister Anonymous.
In all, your blog is good and I agree with those who thought u should have entered the knorr cooking competition.
Expect more comments from ur Ghanaian follower!ciao

My first time to comment… Pls for d record always wash ur cat fish with salt and hot water to remove d dirty (Draw draw) from d fish skin… U kno the fish stays in water for a very long time so dirts re all over it… But wit hot water and salt u can wash out d dirty… Dey re so irritating dats y I don't eat cat fish (my favorite) in local resturants.
This is the 'next level' meal with catfish! I love the fish, and thanks for teaching on how to even make it better.
Hahaha! Moshalewa, a little indulgence once in a while is not a bad idea.
Hi Abena, welcome to our world! You just did what you never thought you'd do.
Hope you checked for salt and season ing before turning down the heat o. Anyway thank you for trying out my recipe.
No more old fry pan here I PROMISE.
The knorr cooking competition is for great cooks my dear. Can I fit try?
Welcome o!
Hi Chichi, when you do, please let us know how it went OK?
Hmmmmmmm!
My dear, the fish is exactly what you eat everyday. Forget all the red pepper and tatashe that is making it colorful. If you add them, you'll get the exact same thing.
So tempting abi?
I did just that dear. There is no way I can cook fresh cat fish without salted warm water. Even my smoked cat fish is scrubbed with sharp salt, and washed properly before use.
Thank you for the info though.
Thanks too Debby, you never fail to leave a comment on this blog. God bless and refill you and other very regular commenters with more comments for wives connection:)

No Bona, they won't disappoint you at all. Remember to leave a few slices of ripe pineapple in the fridge when you leave. When you return from Eden Garden, you cool off with the pineapple. Lol.
Hi Mrs AJ, you don't have to chew the bones, just suck out the juice and you are OK.

Hi chaCha, thank you for the follow.
Thanks for sharing the link, God bless you real good.
This looks yummy. Now if I can find where to buy a whole catfish where I am, will definitely try the recipe.
When I saw fruity rice, I thought you'd cook the rice in fruit juice or something. lol!
Thanks for sharing.
Myne, this recipe is like the easiest of them all. Try it!
Chei Frannyk, so you were actually peeping, you looked at the fresh fish instead of the corn and beans. Well done!
Lovely recipe. We don't eat seafood generally in my house, my mom doesn't like it, so we all grew up not eating it, fresh fish inclusive. If fish don pass ice-fish no thank you.
This however right here looks so delish. The only issue is where to get good cat fish, as my mom doesn't like all these ones they rear in artificial environment e.g drums etc. Then again its a bit expensive, so its a once in a while meal. Lol
Btw the name wives townhall is quite a put-off, what of us the unmarried ones, can't we benefit from what this blog has to offer? Just a Q.
Hahaha 14me, Twalleh to your hubby o. Please give him more. Thank you for trying out the Ewa Agoyin, Lamide did a good job with the cooking.
I think your hubby will like the Edikang Ikong soup too. Make the swallow soft and easy to digest OK.
If possible serve the catfish with some wine. His choice of wine or juice:)

Takia.
Eya! U like food…lol! Which one is 'Soft tail'? Lol, tail is tail..d way u qualify food ehn, it makes me imagine seeing u live and talking abt meals.. Reading stuffs from u waters my mouth…'Soft tail' i feel like grabbing one instantly! Choi!
Huhuhuhu, my laughter in Chinese. @Man Eeter, you know naa that wives like to cook for their Significant others. scroll up and read the blog description under the title, it covers you and even men too. Are you happy now? If you live in a riverine area, getting catfish is very easy. Again, some fish farms are actually far better than drums of water.
Wow, @Anonymous, thank you for returning to share this good news! You will enjoy this one even more by God's grace.
Ok, Shayor, press your thumb on the tail and the head, which is softer? Loolz!
Loolz aunty Ojay.

Sis Eya, u neva disappoint me as usual.I've been silently following ur post for a week but this fish says 'I MUST COMMENT O'. I'll try this with fresh stock fish or croaker coz I don't like fresh catfish stewed(funny taste) only like it With pepper soup. I just hope I won't spoil it with too much pepper (I love peper way 2 much). Wish me luck. Lizzy
I can't deny tbe fact that I love cat fish so much, just yesterday I went late to the market and couldn't get it,I was so sad because I had planned my dinner to be a specail one.thanks aunty eya for this recipe.
Thank you too Doris!
While it is simmering, pour your already sauteed and cooked sauce. (Follow the link up there and see how to prepare the sauce/gravy before adding to the cooked or boiled or simmered fish, and allowing to simmer again until you are OK with the softness.
Hi Lizzy, please don't become a silent reader, I beg you sis. Your comments are highly appreciated anytime. They can never be too much.
I wish you luck o!
Please mind the pepper.
Hi Anonymous, Please click on the gravy link above and see how to make the gravy before adding to the boiled fish.

Hi aunty eya,can I add carrots and runner beans to d recipe?
Yes Juliet, you can add. Just be careful with the quantity of runner beans.
Will the flour be poured directly into the sauted onion, pepper or poured into little water to make a paste before adding. I will appreciate your response. Thx
Make a paste with a little water before adding.
