The Indian Tourism minister has come under fire after he suggested that female tourists in his country should not wear skirts – for their own protection.
Mahesh Sharma made the remarks as part of a “list of dos and don’ts” which he says are set to be given to visitors to his nation.
He also advised visiting females not to venture out alone at night in small towns.
After he was criticised for his comments which some believe blamed rape victims for their clothing rather than rapists for their attacks, he stated that he was speaking from a position of “concern” and that he meant the comments “in the context of religious places”, reports the BBC .
