Hello Aunty Eya,
Thank you for all the comments on your old blog posts. They helped me a lot before we decided on getting married. I’m a new bride and just recently found out we are pregnant. I have a few questions bothering me though. Is it safe to drink garri while pregnant?
MY REPLY:
Hello dear poster. Congratulations on your wedding and pregnancy. This question bothering you, I know that different women will answer it differently because our bodies are all different. Even pregnancies are not the same. After my reply, it’s best to also ask your Doctor.
I’ll like to use my pregnancies as example here. For me drinking garri during pregnancy has never affected me negatively. I crave soaking garri a lot with pregnancies and that’s because it’s bland. Many Nigerian pregnant women love to take garri when pregnancy symptoms prevent them from enjoying well seasoned foods.
Drinking garri during pregnancy is not bad. However, it shouldn’t be your only daily meal because garri alone, on it’s own is not nutritionally balanced. You still need your proteins, vegetables and fruits daily.
When the weather is hot and you need a bowl of drinking garri with some salt or groundnuts, or even roasted cashew nuts. Please go ahead and enjoy that moment. If you can eat eba while pregnant, then, why shouldn’t you drink garri. I know firsthand how garri is processed and honestly, that’s not raw cassava like some believe. Garri is gotten from milled cassava that has been fermented, dried and roasted well over very strong heat before being packed for marketing.
The only reason I won’t advise anyone to enjoy drinking garri is lassa fever. Right now, I think garri is safe to drink. For me, it’s very safe but maybe there are people who have been affected adversely after drinking garri during pregnancy.
If any reader knows of any bad effects of soaking garri on pregnant women, please leave a comment below and enlighten us. Thank you.
