Can a pregnant woman eat Nigerian pepper soup?
Good morning Aunty Eya. God bless you for this forum. Can a pregnant woman eat Nigerian [pepper soup, and hotleaf please?
Pease ma, this is my first pregnancy and I don’t want to make mistakes eating the wrong foods. I crave pepper soup daily and now am scared the hot pepper in there
might affect my baby? Should I stop eating pepper soup for now or there’s no problem?
Another thing is very old water, sometimes enjoy chewing the ice blocks and is that ok, I hope am not freezing my unborn baby? I eat a lot these days, everything but my husband is worried too that the way I eat hot leaf and Bitter Leaf soup might affect the baby.
Please help me clarify. Aunty help me post anonymously please ma.
My Reply:
Can a pregnant woman eat Nigerian pepper soup?Yes! If you know all the ingredients used in cooking the pepper soup and they do not include potash (Kanwu). Again, if pepper soup doesn’t cause you discomforts after eating. If it does, then don’t go near it when pregnant.
Another reason a pregnant woman cannot eat Nigerian pepper soup is the quantity of pepper in the pepper soup. Some pepper soups are just too spicy and can actually cause a runny stomach or diarrhea. Avoid over peppery pepper soup if you are a pregnant woman. Too much pepper can cause you problems. If the pepper in the soup is just mild, and there is no potash, then a pregnant woman can safely eat it.
Can a pregnant woman eat bitter leaf?
I enjoyed bitter leaf soup all through my pregnancies and there were times my pregnancy made me crave bitter leaf soup and it never did hurt. A pregnant woman can eat bitter leaf as long as it’s the normal squeezed bitter leaf used in cooking soups. I’m not sure about bitter leaf juice. That juice is too concentrated so, please stay away from it for now . Bitter leaf on it’s own is like every other green leafy vegetable that gives us nutrition, vitamins. Bitter leaf is good to eat when it’s squeezed and used in Nigerian soups.
Can a pregnant woman eat ugu leaf and hot leaf?
My answer is both yes and no. Yes if it’s not over contracted ugu juice and yes if it’s ugu leaf added to soups. Adding ugu leaf to egusi soup, Nigerian white soup, ogbono soup and other foods is safe for pregnant women. If you are taking ugu juice, dilute it with clean potable water. Over concentrated ugu leaf can cause discomfort and may not be ok for every pregnant women. I drank ugu juice when antenatal care results showed that I was anaemic and it worked. The ugu juice I drank then was well diluted but still green.
Yes a pregnant mum can eat hot leaf in soups. For those who drink hot leaf as green juice, please wait until the baby is born and weaned from breast milk. Concentrated hot leaf or uziza juice is too strong for some digestive systems to handle. (See 10 foods to avoid when breastfeeding a baby)
Have a safe delivery and trust your guts. If you are not sure, talk with your Doctor during antenatals. Ask the Doctor if you can eat these while pregnant.

Or consult a doctor
Mothers in d house over to you.
MrsAjarjee,

There are foods that affects pregnancy,
@ poster,
You can eat ordinary pepper soup with less pepper, don't add uda, uziza etc

You are right Angy.
My dear, I understand exactly how you feel. Just eat everything in moderation as too much of everything is bad… Good luck dear and my God see us through this phase of our lives safely Amen.
@ New jwel, I don't think so, I have 3 kids and I used pepper soup in controlling nausea since that is the only thing my system can accept at that time, and I never had any issue. One thing that people don't understand is that uterus is difference from stomach.
@Prisco,
What kind of pepper soup are you talking about?
If you take pepper soup made with uda, uziza in the early stages, you might abort ur baby.
If stomach is different from uterus why does abortion pills works?
Pineapple has caused a friend miscarriages ..
Pineapple ke???? That's new…How??
Pineapple is used by some women to induce labour even though for me, even a truck load will digest easily and smoothly with no cramps at all. Anything that causes cramps or running stomach might affect pregnancy oh. When a pregnant woman complains of stomach problems, whether cramps or purging, people get worried. Pepper soup is cry good, helps control nausea in most pregnant women but we shouldn't make it too spicy. The hotness shouldn't be the type that can purge you. The whole body is connected. A pain on your toe affects every part of your body. If you eat unhealthy, too hot and say poisonous food, the baby will surely be affected even though the digestive and reproductive organs are not the same.
*Is very good* I mean
I believe New Jwel. Some pregnant moms induce labour at home by eating much pineapples. That doesn't work for everybody.
I chewed ice through out my first pregnancy, did not harm me neither did it harm my baby..had vaginal delivery, I pushed 4times in my 39th week..old wives tale ain't real biko

Please avoid it until after delivery.
According to a diet expert Mrs. Iyabode Alabi, a dietician and former Head of Department of Dietetics, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State,“Most people add kaun to their meals but it is dangerous to the body. Kaun cannot be digested by the human body, so, when it is ingested, it just stays in the body and this can cause health problems.”
Of great mention is the harmful effect of this substance in pregnancy where it can be used to increase uterine contractility and this has been suspected to have the ability to induce abortions in the early stages of pregnancy if used in high enough concentration.
This was documented in the study entitled: “Effects Of Natron (Kanwa) Varieties on Murine Virgin Uterine Contractility” carried out by a team of researchers from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.

Please stop with the bitter leaf already. Bodies are different and what is normal for one pregnant woman might cause miscarriage for another. For vitamins you can take multivitamins. Your Doctor will recommend routine drugs that won't cause bleeding or discomforts. Safe delivery!
Bitter leaf soup is great but if after eating it you feel any discomfort, please don't try a second round.
Please avoid potash for now, until you are delivered of the bouncing cute baby.
Bitter leaf added to egusi soup is not much, just a sprinkle. If you are scared, then wait a bit more ok?
am yet to see one comment from a doctor that knows these.as far as am concern.food in your stomach process into 3 classes of chemical structure; (amino acids, carbohydrate and fatty acid). now it all depends on what food you eat.firstly when you about to eat any food know the nutrient content is very important.how in pregnancy food tend to be processed quickly then in non pregnant women.so therefore leading to so bloating, nausea, vomiting and etc.yes there are some few food that has acidic end product on your body when eating in excess.do you know even through pineapple is sweet it has high acidic content which good affect a normal non pregnant woman? nevertheless a pregnant mother.so as a pregnant mother knowing food content and eating food in moderate is important and for even non pregnant mothers of people.
yes someone was right to state that the uterus is different from the stomach but remember that what you eat is not what you pass out.therefore, our food is been processed(breakdown)to various site that needs the essential nutrient.processed process been carried my the blood to various site.such as the uterus too.

Yes.
They may not say the truth about ingredients. Use the pepper soup recipes here on the blog to make yours or let someone help you. If you trust where you are buying from, then go ahead.
Yes you can.
If the sauce isn't causing any discomforts, add proteins and vegetables to it and try to vary the proteins and vegetables at different times. Congratulations. Things might change later, your cravings might change.
