Any Ideas On How To Create A Fun Christmas Holiday For Kids?

 Christmas Decorations

A fun-filled holiday does not just happen, it has to be created. Making kids happy with fun memories is something that we need to plan. Sometimes, holidays come and go and the only time we realize that the holiday has passed by is when we start getting them ready for school. How can one really create a memorable Christmas for kids? I am not talking about robbing a bank or organizing big fat children parties and all that. No! I mean a simple but memorable holiday.

This Christmas Holiday,
I plan on watching good holiday movies with my family. You know, right now in Abuja, public places don’t get crowded like it used to be. Parks are sometimes deserted. Holiday Centers are kind of dry and boring unlike before. Staying at home during holiday was never an option for me, I loved to just go out even if it is to a park and see other people having fun. The situation
of things in Naija has changed everything. If I knew some good movies for family, I’d rather stay indoors most of the time/weekends, and watch with the girls.

Fun At Kids’ Christmas Party
I want a truly fun filled Christmas for my family, but how do I create it? My brain is just reading blank right now. I can’t come up with any special activity for Kids. I would like to give them a Christmas that would leave memories. We know that kids will become adults one day, and many a times, it is what we introduce ,that they will replicate with their families. Whether consciously or unconsciously, the things we do, activities we involve ourselves and families in, come from our childhood memories. I always feel that creating good and fun memories for family and especially kids will go a long way in helping them see their childhood as a happy one.
When this kids become adults tomorrow, they should be able to flash back and smile. They should be able to confidently tell their friends that they had a happy and fun-filled childhood, and this is up to us as parents and guardians.
Last night, I sat down with my pen and jotter and scribbled down a few things I could think of.

  1. Creating fun picnics at least once a week for the period of their holiday. I listed down some places where I would love us to picnic.
  2. Movie nights on Fridays
  3. Family Party nights on Saturdays
  4.  Indoor games nights on Sundays
  5. Television free evenings on Wednesdays, to encourage family members do what ever other fun thing they can think of or even sit down and just gist and laugh instead of sit glued to a TV screen.
  6. Slumber parties for the kids. Haven’t figured out how many times for the duration of the holiday. I understand the holiday may last for about four weeks and if I can create some good memories within these weeks, it will make me happy. When they resume back to school, kids should be able to say fun things about their holiday apart from listing the number of programs they watched on TV.
  7. Christmas Tree decoration day at the village. It is their sole responsibility to decorate it as colorful as they want without my interference. Have a day of fun-with-the-tree.
Traveling is out of the list. The longest travel distance will be to the village. so, now if it is to be fun, it is up to me.   By God’s grace, I know that you and I shall see and celebrate this Christmas. After Christmas lunch, what next? Do you have any fun suggestions for kids? Please help a sister!  As women, the quantity and quality of fun in our homes can depend to a large extent on us. Many Dads are not into that giving-kids-fun kind of thing.  The major worry in their head is how to give  their families a comfortable life. That comfortable life they think about, may not have to do with anything like creating fun moments/memories for children.

Now, back to Saturday movie nights; I can only think of only a few holiday movies, and these kids, the ones you think you want to surprise them with, they end up telling you the story before you even click on play. I am in search of movies that will get them all screaming with excitement and looking with eyes wide open. I only could get a few suggestions from babysitting.net and these are:
  • Charlie Brown Christmas
  • A Christmas Story
  • Frosty The Snowman
  • How The Grinch Stole Christmas
  • The Polar Express
  • Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer
  • Shrek The Halls
  • It’s A Wonderful Life
  • The Santa Clause
  • The Muppet Christmas Carol.
I need  more suggestions before I make up my mind on what/which to go in search of. Open to  your Favorite Holiday Traditions too!!.
Some of these, the girls have seen, and I won’t want to hear any one of them say something like “So, this is it? ahn ahn Mommy we’ve watched this movie.”  I know that there are some interesting movies out there that one can watch over and over without getting bored, but can’t think of any right now.
As the search begins, I am looking forward to suggestions that can help me to, by God’s grace *maximize*  their enjoyment. Don’t keep it to yourself please. Spit out that suggestion, and, thank you in advance!

  2. One of the things we did as a family, the Christmas I did not travel with the children, was that hubby took us to one of the 5-star hotels in Lagos, that's where we live, and we lodged there for a good number of days, went out to the cinema, visited friends, went to the mall, and generally had fun. But if truth be told, Christmas minus extended family can be quite boring. So it was rest from cooking, or cleaning and all that being at home has to offer. This Christmas, I'm off with them to visit my parents, since our initial plans to go abroad with them did not work out. Their grandparents will spoil them silly while yours truly rests, hahahaha.
