While trying to learn how to tie gele myself, I watched a few YouTube videos on how to tie gele and can confidently tell you today that Nigerian Youtuber Nelo Okeke shared a gele tying tutorial that’s as easy as ABC.

She didn’t use a model’s head to teach but her own head. That way when you dress up alone and want to do a simple gele style on your head, following her video tutorial won’t be difficult.

I am going to post her video for us the gele tying learners.

After watching that video, you’ll realise that some gele styles are very easy to make.

TYPES OF GELE MATERIALS IN NIGERIA

There are different types of geles.  Some are easy to tie while others require a bit of expertise.  The ease or difficulty of wrapping gele on the head depends on how soft or hard the gele material is.

The different types of geles can be grouped according to the fabric used in the making of gele.

  • Ankara gele
  • Damask gele
  • Aso-oke gele
  • Lace material gele
  • Gele scarf material
  • Rayon and polyester gele and a few others named according to the fabric used.

The damask gele is expensive depending on the quality of damask material used in the making.

Ankara gele or damask gele or any other is not the name of the gele style. It is the name of the fabric used for that gele

When you style a piece of your Ankara material on your head as gele scarf, that is an Ankara gele that you are wearing.

Ankara gele:

Ankara gele styles are beautiful and very colourful but not as popular as the other hard fabric types of gele.

Most Nigerian women prefer to wear Ankara geles to church on Sundays.  Others love to wear them for events like naming ceremonies, funerals and other not too flamboyant events.

Ankara gele is rare at Nigerian weddings.  It is mostly seen at smaller occasions that do not really attract large crowds.

When I tie Ankara gele to church, it’s small on my head to enable the congregation behind sit comfortably without having to stretch their necks to see what’s happening at the altar.

Ankara geles are mostly worn when there is an asoebi.  A piece the material used for the uniform outfit is  tied on the head to match.

HOW TO TIE ANKARA GELE

Ankara gele is the easiest to tie by yourself because of the softness and feel of Ankara fabric.

There are YouTube videos on how to tie Ankara videos and I bet you they are the easiest to follow.

Anyone that cam do a simple headwrap on her head should be able to make Ankara gele on her head.  After the headwrap is knotted, styling the sides, front and back or trying to leave out extra fabric to give a chunky finish is just the typical way of tying simple gele styles.

Simple classy gele styles for invited guests should include Ankara gele styles

When you are not the center of attention.  When you are an invited guest to that not so big event, a beautiful Ankara gele on your head will not only make you stand out but will also show simplicity and some modesty in dressing up.

Aside categorizing gele according to the fabric used, there are different types depending on who is wearing the gele.
